MOBILE
– The State of Alabama
will commend numerous volunteers and statewide
leaders for their service to
Alabama at the 2008 Governor’s
Volunteer Leadership Conference. The conference
is co-hosted by the Alabama Department of
Homeland Security and the Governor’s Office of
Faith-Based and Community Initiatives. This
year’s theme is “Putting the Pieces Together.”
Alabama Homeland Security Director Jim Walker
says, “We are very fortunate to live in a state
where our citizens care deeply about others and
are willing to give of their time and talent to
lend a helping hand. I know the citizen
volunteers and leaders participating at this
conference will return home with techniques and
information they can use to better serve their
communities.”
Volunteers will attend educational seminars
discussing disaster care, Citizen Corps Across
Alabama, volunteer management, and donations
management.
Sydney Hoffman, Executive Director of the
Governor’s Office of Faith-Based and Community
Initiatives, says, “Every year, I am so
encouraged by these hundreds of volunteers.
These people really enjoy what they do, and we
want to make sure they receive the proper
training and information so they can continue to
serve the unique needs of their communities.”
This is the conference’s second year to include
national service groups, state agencies, faith
and community-based organizations, and Voluntary
Organizations Active in Disaster.
