Alabama DHS Job
Information
Thank you for your interest
in employment opportunities
within Homeland Security.
As you may be aware, the Alabama
Department of Homeland Security
(AL DHS) and the US Department
of Homeland Security (US DHS)
are two totally different
organizations. The Director of
AL DHS is a state cabinet-level
official and works for the
Governor of Alabama. The
Director of US DHS is a federal
cabinet-level official and works
for the President. When the US
Department of Homeland Security
was created in 2003, 22 separate
federal organizations were
merged into one organization and
US DHS assumed responsibility
for a staff of over 180,000
personnel. As you might expect,
there are numerous employment
opportunities within US DHS. You
may obtain more information
about
US DHS at their web site
and you may obtain more
information about the
availability of federal jobs at
the USA Jobs web site.
The Alabama Department of
Homeland Security is a
relatively new state agency and
we have 13 authorized positions
and 13 personnel assigned. All
our positions are located in
Montgomery and we have no
projected vacancies at this
time. The primary career field
in our department relates to
Emergency Management and our 4
positions are all filled. We
presently have no authorizations
for law enforcement or
intelligence analyst positions
within our organization.
If you wish to compete for
Emergency Management positions
(or other career fields)
throughout the state, you should
apply with State Personnel, take
the test, and get on the
register. Then when a position
comes open, you'll be notified
and will have the opportunity
for an interview. If you're not
familiar with the AL State
hiring procedures, log into the
Alabama Personnel Department web
site and the instructions will
guide you through the
application process.
The Alabama Emergency Management
Agency (AEMA), located in
Clanton, also has a significant
number of Emergency Management
positions and vacancies occur
periodically. You might also
consider service in this
organization and look into
opportunities that might be
available. You may apply for
vacant positions in AEMA through
the Alabama Personnel Department
discussed above.
While searching for employment
opportunities in the Homeland
Security field, you might check
out the information on our
volunteer page and consider
service as a citizen volunteer.
The Citizen’s Corps and
Community Emergency Response
Team programs offer
opportunities for you to
volunteer your skills and assist
the citizens of Alabama during
actual emergency situations. A
link is provided on the left
side of our home page or you may
go direct to our volunteer page
for additional information.
Good luck in your job search and
thank you again for your
interest in Homeland Security.
Best Regards,
Spencer Collier
